Welcome to more than
100 Years of Summer…
The University’s original plan for “Summer School” was to meet the continuing education needs of Nevada’s school teachers. So in 1912, Summer School was administered by the College of Education. The first Summer School was held from June 25-Aug. 2, 1912 with 87 teachers enrolled. When not in class, the 1912 Summer School students went swimming at Moana Springs, saw the July 4 fireworks at Belle Isle Park, participated in walking tours of Reno, and rode the Sierra Pacific train to Lake Tahoe.
With the success of its first Summer School effort, the Board of Regents voted unanimously on July 31, 1912, to make Summer Session permanent.
Today, Summer Session enrolls nearly 7,000 students and features hundreds of classes in three terms, online learning and studies abroad, as well as a host of opportunities for students to live and learn on campus, including campus housing, concerts on the quad, Tuesday movie nights and free barbecues.
